The Republic of South Sudan’s independence: Address

Congratulations – this is indeed a historic day for the people of South Sudan.

For many Norwegians this is also a historic day. We have followed you and supported you in the challenges leading up to this day. I am proud that Norway has been part of the comprehensive peace process that culminated in a referendum in which the people of South Sudan voted for independence with an overwhelming majority. Together with your many friends we will help you build a peaceful, stable, democratic and prosperous South Sudan.

Let me add that this is a historic day for Africa too. Your neighbours have supported you and will continue to be your close partners as you take your rightful place among them as an independent state.

On the occasion of the independence of the Republic of South Sudan, it is a particular pleasure for me to announce that Norway’s symbolic gift to the people of South Sudan is a new national archive.

From our own history we know that such an institution can play an important role in building a common national identity. Historical documents are an important part of any country’s heritage, providing a source of information for research into its history, and ultimately paving the way for the creation of a collective national identity so important to a newborn state.

It is my sincere hope that the national archive will not only preserve historical documents, but also function as an arena for nation-building and peaceful coexistence, and develop a sense of belonging to the nation.
