Concluded visit at Nidaros Cathedral

The Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK) conducts research and development activities for enterprises in the field of marine technology. MARINTEK is a part of the SINTEF Research Group, one of the largest independent research organisations in Scandinavia. The institute’s headquarters and laboratories are located in Trondheim, and Crown Prince Haakon, President Gauck and Ms Schadt were greeted at Tyholt by Unni Steinsmo, President and CEO of SINTEF, and Gunnar Bovim, Rector of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. 

The guests were given a guided tour of the hydrodynamic laboratories. At the salinity pool they also had the chance to meet researchers and students, many of them German, who presented information about their projects. 

Concert in Nidaros Cathedral

Following a luncheon in the Archbishop’s Palace, hosted by Mayor of Trondheim Rita Ottervik, the group walked to Nidaros Cathedral, where Helga Haugland Byfuglien of the archdiocese and Steinar Bjerkestrand of the Nidaros Cathedral’s restoration workers showed the guests around Norway’s national cathedral. It is believed that the building was completed in about 1300, and reconstruction and restoration activities have been ongoing for over a century. 

A concert with the cathedral’s cantor Magne H. Draagen and the Nidaros Cathedral Choir concluded the State Visit. Several German lieder and psalms were performed, and guests were treated to Johan Sebastian Bach’s Prelude in G minor played on the Wagner organ. This beautiful baroque organ was built by Joachim Wager, one of the great organ builders from the Baroque era in Germany, and construction was completed in 1741.
